The Many Faces of Charity

There are many who say that charitable works and deeds are important. And there are many of us who will respond, in our own minds, “but I can barely maintain my own life, I do not have extra to give.” I am one of those many, so I give a dollar here and five dollars there. All while feeling that it is not enough, that I am not sufficient.

And yet there is so much we can each do, and so much that we already do, to improve the lives of others. Sharing a smile with a neighbor, waving to a stranger, being nice to someone who is grumpy, these are all charitable works that deserve credit.

Charity can also take surprising forms. Standing up for yourself is one of those. Standing up for yourself could be seen as an act that you do for yourself. I do not believe this is completely accurate. When you stand up for yourself, you teach others by your example. And that is good and charitable work right there.

Taking care of yourself is also an essential piece of doing good works. If we want to give and share goodness, we must care for ourselves and recharge. For we are the charity we want to give to the world.

What small (or large) forms of charity can you do today?

  1. i have listened to a friend who really needs to be listened to. i sense that others don’t listen as seriously as i do. so here i am: all yours, all ears!
    makes us both happy.
the giver of kindness receives as much as the receiver.

  2. Hello,

Thanks so much for these words. Sometimes we think of charity as just giving arms but it is actually more than that. We must accept the fact that we ourselves are charity to the world. So we must be able to influence the world with either our service, words, arms, and so more..
